List of Previous Deputy Governors

Smt. Usha Thorat

Smt. Usha Thorat has today taken over as Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of India. Her appointment is for a period of five years.

Smt. Thorat held the post of Executive Director of the RBI since April 2004.

Born on February 20, 1950, Smt. Thorat received her masters degree in economics from Delhi School of Economics.

Smt. Thorat, who joined the Reserve Bank in April 1972, has vast experience in cash and debt management of central and state governments, government securities market development and regulation, financial markets, forex reserve management, foreign exchange management, banking regulation and supervision and payment and settlement systems. She was a member of faculty at Reserve Bank Staff College and has also served in the RBI's Guwahati Office.

She has been on the boards of Bank of Baroda, Indian Overseas Bank and the Securities Trading Corporation of India.

Smt. Thorat was on important Committees of RBI, viz., Group on Instruments of Sterilisation, Group of State Finance Secretaries on Fiscal Risk of Guarantees, Group on Ways and Means Advances to State Governments and Committee on Capital Account Convertibility.

She is presently member of the Committee on Global Financial Systems of the Bank for International Settlements and also served as a member of the International Task Force on Security Settlement Systems set up by the International Organisation of Securities Commissions of the Bank for International Settlements.

Smt. Thorat's hobbies include bird watching and yoga.

Smt. Shyamala Gopinath

Smt. Shyamala Gopinath, Deputy Governor is reappointed Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of India up to June 20, 2011. Smt. Gopinath was earlier appointed as Deputy Governor on September 21, 2004 for a period of five years.

Smt. Gopinath looks after Internal Debt Management Department, Foreign Exchange Department, Department of Government and Bank Accounts, Department of Non-Banking Supervision, Department of External Investments and Operations, Financial Markets Department, Secretary's Department, Department of Communication and Legal Department.

Smt. K.J. Udeshi

Smt. K J Udeshi has been today appointed as a Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of India. The Government of India has, in its notification issued today, stated that she will hold charge as the Deputy Governor till October 12, 2005 when she attains the age of 62 or until further orders.

Born in 1943, Smt. Udeshi is a post graduate in Economics, is a diploma holder in Bank Management from National Institute of Bank Management and is a Certificated Associate of the Indian Institute of Bankers (CAIIB). Joining the Reserve Bank in 1965, she rose from the ranks and was appointed as Executive Director in 2001. She has had a long stint in exchange control and the Reserve Bank's internal administration and human resources departments.

Shri Rakesh Mohan

Dr. Rakesh Mohan took over as Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of India today. His appointment is for a period of three years.

Dr. Mohan has been appointed Deputy Governor in place of Dr. Y.V. Reddy who has been appointed as Executive Director, International Monetary Fund.

As Deputy Governor, Dr. Mohan will look after the Monetary Policy Department, Department of External Investments and Operations, Internal Debt Management Cell, Department of Economic Analysis and Policy, Department of Statistical Analysis and Computer Services, Department of Government and Bank Accounts and Department of Expenditure and Budgetary Control.

Born on January 14, 1948, Dr. Rakesh Mohan received his Masters degree and Doctorate in Economics from Princeton University, and BA in Economics from Yale University. He is also a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from Imperial College of Science and Technology, University of London.

Dr. Rakesh Mohan has researched extensively in the areas of economic reforms and liberalisation, industrial economics, urban economics, infrastructure studies and economic regulation. He is the author of three books on urban economics and urban development and co-author of one on Indian economic policy reforms, and of numerous articles.

Prior to taking over as Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank, Dr. Rakesh Mohan was Director and Chief Executive of the Indian Council for Research and International Economic Relations and Vice Chairman, Infrastructure Development Finance Company. He also held the position of Adviser to the Finance Minister and Chief Economic Adviser between January 4, 2001 and May 15, 2002. He is also Member of the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister; Member of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India; Member of the Board of Governors, Institute of Economic Growth; Member, Board of Governors, National Institute of Public Finance and Policy; Member, Governing Body, National Council of Applied Economic Research; Member, Board of Governors, Madras School of Economics.

He chaired the Expert Group on Railways (1999-2001); Expert Group on Commercialisation of Infrastructure Projects (1994-96), and the Expert Group on Petrochemicals (1992-93).

Shri Vepa Kamesam

The Government of India has re-appointed Shri Vepa Kamesam as a Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of India for the period from July 1, 2003 to September 23, 2003, when he will attain the age of 62 years or until further orders.

Shri Kamesam was originally appointed as a Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of India, on July 1, 2001, for a period of two years or till he attained the age of 62 years, whichever was earlier.
