Dear Sir/Madam,

The Reserve Bank of India has been conducting periodical Surveys of Foreign Collaboration in Indian Industry. So far, six such Surveys have been conducted and the last Survey covered the period 1986-87 to 1993-94.

2. The recent years have witnessed significant liberalization of the foreign investment policy and the terms and conditions relating to approvals for foreign technical/financial collaboration agreements. In this context, it is felt that a fresh study on foreign collaborations would be useful not only for research workers in this area but also for industries themselves, as it would give them an idea of the potential areas of competition. The Reserve Bank, therefore, proposes to conduct the Seventh Survey covering the period 1994-95 to 2000-01. The purpose of covering seven year period is essentially to ensure continuity of data.

3. The present Survey covers all Indian companies having either equity capital participation from foreign companies or foreign technical collaboration agreements in force, during any of the years (1994-95 to 2000-01) covered by the Survey.

4. Keeping in view the constraints on your own time and the importance you would attach for seeing the Survey results published as early as possible, we have tried to keep the size of the questionnaire as brief as possible.

5. Your company is one of those which has foreign participation in equity capital and/or has received an approval for foreign technical collaboration. We request you to kindly take some time off your busy schedule to give us the benefit of information on the attached questionnaire. We are enclosing two copies of the questionnaire (the format of the questionnaire can also be accessed from our website www.rbi.org.in) and would be much thankful if one copy of the filled-in questionnaire is returned to us as quickly as possible, preferably within four weeks of the receipt of this letter either by post or you can e-mail it to us at itddeap@rbi.org.in. We would greatly appreciate if your company could also send to us balance sheets of the last seven years beginning 1994-95.

6. If the collaboration approval/agreement was rendered infructuous or if your company does not fall within the scope of the Survey, we would greatly appreciate your sending a ‘nil’ return indicating the reasons thereof.

7. If a new concern has been formed to implement the collaboration proposal, approval for which was already obtained by you, please do us the favour of forwarding the questionnaire forms to the new concern, and advise us of your action. We would greatly appreciate your initiative in this matter.

8. Please let us assure you that the confidentiality of your information would be maintained. The treatment we give in our surveys is not individual company-wise. We would keep the identity of the company secure.

9. The completed questionnaire may be forwarded to the Director, Division of International Trade, Department of Economic Analysis and Policy, Reserve Bank of India, Central Office Building, Post Box No. 1036, Mumbai – 400 001.
